Key takeaways

  • Microsoft Clarity offers the first free public GEO tool, with three metrics: citations, Share of Authority, and AI referral traffic.
  • Its unique strength is first-party data, based on real citation events, not scraped synthetic prompts.
  • Its main limit is being retrospective: it shows who already cites you, but doesn’t measure your position on specific strategic prompts.
  • Clarity is an excellent free starting point, to complement with a proactive monitoring tool to truly run your GEO strategy.

Microsoft made a rare move in 2026: giving away for free a feature most GEO platforms charge hundreds of euros for. I’m Florian Zorgnotti, SEO and GEO consultant, and I use Clarity daily. Its new “AI Visibility” section deserves attention, but it follows a precise logic you should understand before expecting too much. Here’s what it really measures, its strengths, its limits, and how to complement it.

What is Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility?

Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility is a free analytics section that shows whether AIs cite your site in their answers. Built into Microsoft’s free behavioural analytics tool, known for its heatmaps and session recordings, it reached general availability in spring 2026. You’ll find it in the Clarity dashboard, under Dashboards then AI Visibility.

Its promise is clear: answer a question that previously required a paid platform, namely whether an AI cites your site and how strongly. Clarity detects the ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity engines. For a small structure that can’t justify a monthly subscription to a dedicated GEO platform, it’s a concrete, budget-free starting point.

The 3 key metrics of Clarity AI Visibility

Clarity structures its data around three complementary indicators. Understanding them avoids misreading the dashboard.

  • Citations count the total number of times an AI cited your site over the period, across 7, 28, or 90-day windows. It’s the raw volume measure of your presence.
  • Share of Authority (SoA) shows your slice of all AI citations in your topic area. An SoA of 13% means that on AI queries in your field, your site is cited in about one answer out of eight. It’s the most strategic indicator, as it positions your authority against competitors.
  • AI referral traffic detects when a visitor arrives via a link in an AI answer, distinguishing two channels: AIPlatform for organic answers and PaidAIPlatform for paid placements like an ad in Copilot.

Topic Insights: the update that changes things

Topic Insights, rolled out in July 2026, turns Clarity from a citation counter into a competitive analysis tool. The feature groups AI queries into intent themes and lets you track a specific topic, with a dedicated report refreshed weekly. You no longer just see how often you’re cited, but on which topics, against whom, and how much of the answer your content actually supports.

Three metrics structure this report, and each deserves separate attention.

  • Competitive share measures your slice of all page citations on the tracked topic, with a ranking against competing domains. It answers: on this theme, where do I stand.
  • Citation rate shows the percentage of the theme’s prompts where you’re cited. A 50% rate means you appear in one answer out of two, revealing your real coverage of the topic.
  • Avg. answer contribution is the most interesting. It measures how much of the generated answer your content actually supports. You can be cited without the AI truly relying on you: this metric separates substantive citation from incidental mention.

The report adds two concrete analysis blocks. The first, Top content opportunities, shows how other sources are used in answers, grouped by editorial angle, for example pricing benchmarks, reputation signals, or technical implementation. You see which competitors cover which angles you leave empty. The second, Your top content to AI responses, identifies your own pages contributing most to answers, with the exact URL. It’s a direct signal for knowing which content to reinforce.

Clarity’s real strength: real first-party data

Clarity stands out through the nature of its data. It rests on real citation events, not synthetic prompts generated then scraped. This difference is structural. Many GEO tools fabricate artificial prompts, run them through AIs, and analyse the results to look for your brand. This approach has two well-identified problems.

First, it inflates the apparent citation volume, because those queries aren’t real user questions but manufactured ones. Second, it works on a limited prompt set and a hand-picked competitor list, which mechanically skews the Share of Voice. An SEO consultant sums up Clarity’s advantage: its data is grounded in real retrieval events rather than simulated queries. For a small team, it’s a reliable base to establish an honest starting point.

The limits of Clarity AI Visibility to know

Clarity has real limits worth stating before relying on it alone. The first is its retrospective nature. The tool shows you who already cites you, from observed traffic and citations. It doesn’t measure your position on a specific strategic prompt you’d want to target but don’t yet appear on. You see the past, not the opportunities you’re missing.

The second limit concerns referral traffic. The data is inferred from the referrer, making it directional rather than exact. When the referrer is stripped, the visit often shifts to direct traffic, and your real AI traffic is underestimated. Treat this figure as a trend, useful for spotting momentum, not as a precise count.

The third limit touches the measurement method. Topic Insights lets you track a given topic, but Clarity observes citations as they occur, without actively querying engines with several phrasings of the same question. Yet AI models are probabilistic: they don’t return the same answer twice. Without aggregating variations of a prompt, a measure stays sensitive to that variance. Clarity tells you what happened on a theme; it doesn’t systematically test your position on the exact phrasings your clients use.

How to complement Clarity for a full GEO strategy?

Clarity perfectly answers one question: who already cites me, and on which themes. A full GEO strategy raises two others: am I visible on the exact phrasings my clients use, and what should I fix to progress. That’s where a proactive monitoring tool complements Clarity’s observational analysis.

A tool like Cockpyt AI acts on this complementary ground. Where Clarity observes citations as they occur, I actively query ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity with a basket of 7 variations of each strategic prompt, to smooth the probabilistic variance of answers and get a representative share of voice rather than a snapshot. I add a complete GEO audit, technical and editorial, with a prioritised action plan telling you what to fix first. The GA4 connection then ties this visibility to real traffic, like Clarity’s referral traffic, but attached to your target prompts. All at a flat €29/month annual, currently, with a 14-day trial and no credit card. Clarity lays the free base and thematic analysis; a proactive tool turns that base into a tested roadmap.

How to enable AI visibility in Microsoft Clarity?

Setup is deliberately simple, with no complex code to deploy. Here are the steps to make the report appear.

  • Install the Clarity script on your site, or the official plugin if you’re on WordPress, making sure to use the latest version.
  • Let the script run for at least 7 days, as data accumulates progressively and may appear with a slight delay.
  • Open the dashboard then the AI Visibility section, where you’ll find the Citations tab and, depending on your setup, AI Bot Activity.
  • For AI bot activity, connect a supported CDN like Fastly, Amazon CloudFront, or Cloudflare via the project settings.

If the tab doesn’t appear, check that the script has been active for at least a week. GEO data builds over months, not weeks, so start early to have history when you need it.

FAQ: your questions about Microsoft Clarity and AI visibility

Is Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility really free?

Yes. It’s the first free public GEO tool, built into Microsoft Clarity which is itself free. It gives access to citations, Share of Authority, and AI referral traffic without a subscription, where comparable data previously required a paid platform.

Which AI engines does Clarity detect?

Clarity identifies ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity in its AIPlatform channel. It distinguishes organic traffic from AI answers from paid traffic, like a sponsored ad in Copilot, classified as PaidAIPlatform.

Does Clarity replace a paid GEO tool?

Not entirely. Clarity excels at establishing a free base and seeing who already cites you, with reliable first-party data. But it’s retrospective and doesn’t track a basket of strategic prompts you define. To actively run your visibility and know what to fix, a proactive monitoring tool complements it.

Is Clarity’s AI traffic data accurate?

It’s directional rather than exact. The data is inferred from the referrer, and when it’s stripped, the visit shifts to direct traffic. Your real AI traffic is therefore likely underestimated. Use this figure to spot trends, not as a precise count down to the citation.

What’s the difference between Clarity and a monitoring tool like Cockpyt AI?

Clarity is retrospective: it shows who already cites you from observed traffic. Cockpyt AI is proactive: it measures your visibility on a basket of 7 strategic prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, adds a technical audit with a prioritised action plan, and ties it all to GA4. The two are complementary, one for the base, the other for steering.

What does Clarity’s Topic Insights feature add?

Topic Insights groups AI queries by theme and adds three metrics: Competitive share, your slice of citations on the topic with a ranking, Citation rate, the percentage of prompts where you’re cited, and Avg. answer contribution, how much of the answer your content actually supports. It also identifies the angles your competitors cover and your pages contributing most to answers.

Do you need a CDN to use Clarity AI Visibility?

Not for citations and Share of Authority, accessible with the simple Clarity script. However, the AI Bot Activity feature, which tracks AI bots visiting your site, requires connecting a supported CDN like Fastly, Amazon CloudFront, or Cloudflare.
