Key takeaways

  • Google AI Mode launched in France on 22 July 2026, after two years of deadlock over neighbouring rights.
  • Targeting a position in AI Mode makes no sense: running the same keyword three times on the same day returns only 9.2% identical URLs (SE Ranking, 10,000 keywords, June 2025).
  • AI Mode and AI Overviews cite the same URLs just 13.7% of the time while saying the same thing 86% of the time. They are two separate workstreams.
  • The only reliable metric is share of voice aggregated across multiple runs, never an isolated position.

Google AI Mode became available in France on 22 July 2026. The rollout started at 7am and is reaching French users progressively. The question SEO leads are asking this morning is no longer when, but how to get in.

Here is the short answer. You appear in AI Mode when your pages answer precise sub-questions inside a self-contained passage, with an identifiable brand entity and recognised topical authority. Everything else is noise.

One figure frames the stakes. Across three runs of the same keyword on the same day, AI Mode reuses only 9.2% of the same URLs (SE Ranking, 10,000-keyword study, June 2025). Nine citations out of ten change. I will put it bluntly: approach AI Mode with rank-tracking reflexes and you will fly blind for six months.

How do you appear in Google AI Mode in 2026?

You appear in Google AI Mode by meeting six conditions at once: a factual answer placed in a self-contained 40-to-80-word passage, coverage of the sub-questions generated by query fan-out, a brand entity named explicitly in the text, topical authority built outside your own site, technical accessibility without blocking JavaScript rendering, and maintained content freshness.

These six levers are not ranked by importance. They work as entry conditions. Miss one of the six and you stay out.

Google published an official guide on optimising content for its AI features in May 2026. Its position is consistent: AI features rely on the same ranking systems as classic search, and no additional technical requirement exists to appear in them. That claim is accurate at the crawling level. It is misleading operationally, and the rest of this article explains why.

What is Google AI Mode and when did it reach France?

Google AI Mode is Google’s conversational search tab, powered by Gemini models. It answers complex questions with a written synthesis, source links and follow-up questions. Unlike classic search, it does not hand you a list of links to sort through: it produces an answer.

The French rollout of 22 July 2026

Google confirmed the rollout of AI Overviews and AI Mode across France on 22 July 2026. Until then France was among the few excluded markets, while AI Overviews already ran in more than 120 countries.

The blocker was neither technical nor linguistic. It was legal. The 2019 neighbouring rights law requires Google to compensate press publishers for reusing their content, which conflicted with the summarising logic of AI answers. The French competition authority fined Google 250 million euros over this matter in March 2024.

The agreement reached with publishers includes three commitments: the option for each outlet to appear in AI results or not, transparency on impression volumes generated, and compensation under neighbouring rights for publishers already covered.

AI Mode or AI Overviews: two systems, two workstreams

AI Mode and AI Overviews are two distinct Google products, and that distinction carries heavy operational consequences. AI Overviews appear automatically at the top of the classic results page. AI Mode is a dedicated interface, reached through a tab, where the user asks successive questions.

Ahrefs compared 540,000 query pairs from its Brand Radar tool using US data from September 2025. The result deserves a second reading: the two systems cite the same URLs in only 13.7% of cases, while producing semantically similar answers 86% of the time. Despina Gavoyannis, Senior SEO Specialist at Ahrefs, sums it up: “9 out of 10 times, AI Mode and AI Overview agreed on what to say”, while drawing on different sources.

The consequence is direct. Being cited in an AI Overview does not guarantee a citation in AI Mode. You are not steering one channel, you are steering two.

Why being “first” in Google AI Mode means nothing

AI Mode does not produce a ranking. It produces a probability distribution. That difference changes entirely how you should measure and steer your visibility.

Structural volatility: 9.2% overlap

SE Ranking ran 10,000 keywords through AI Mode three times on the same day in June 2025. Average exact-URL overlap across the three runs came to 9.2%. At domain level it rose to 14.7%. In 21.2% of cases, no URL appeared in all three sets.

The comparison with organic results is just as telling. Only 14% of URLs cited by AI Mode appear in the organic top 10 for the same keyword. In 17.9% of queries, overlap with organic results is zero.

An AI Mode answer contains 12.6 links on average, of which 90.8% sit in a separate block rather than inline within the answer text.

What volatility actually gives you

In my view, the pessimistic reading of these numbers misses the point. When 91% of URLs change between runs, the pool of eligible sources is far wider than the top 3 of a classic SERP. In traditional search, position 8 captures almost nothing. In AI Mode, a page inside the eligible pool statistically gets recurring windows of appearance.

Volatility is not your enemy. It is your way in. The work consists of entering the pool, not conquering a fixed slot that does not exist.

That reading imposes measurement discipline. A single reading teaches you nothing, it misleads you. Only share of voice aggregated across dozens of runs produces a usable signal. This is exactly the principle behind Cockpyt AI’s weekly measurement across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

How query fan-out picks your pages

AI Mode does not search for your keyword. It breaks the user’s question into several sub-queries, runs them in parallel, then assembles the answers. This mechanism is called query fan-out, and it explains both the volatility observed and the type of pages selected.

Take a concrete example. A user asks “which tool should I use to track my visibility in ChatGPT”. AI Mode does not run that query. It runs a series of sub-queries in parallel: definition of AI visibility tracking, list of existing tools, pricing comparison, user reviews, local alternatives. Each sub-query fetches its own sources.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a page covering a single angle thoroughly stands a better chance than a generalist page skimming everything. Second, your exposure surface is no longer measured by ranked keywords but by the number of sub-questions your content genuinely covers.

The average AI Mode query is markedly longer than a classic search. Users type complete questions, not keyword strings. Your headings should follow that format.

The 6 levers that trigger a citation in AI Mode

Six levers concentrate most of the work. The table below ranks them by effort required and observed time to result.

Lever Concrete action Effort Timeframe
Extractable passage Place a 40-to-80-word factual answer right after each heading Low 2 to 4 weeks
Fan-out coverage Cover derived sub-questions, not just the head keyword Medium 1 to 2 months
Brand entity Name the brand in the body text, not only in the logo or URL Low 1 to 3 months
External authority Earn mentions on third-party sites, YouTube and specialist forums High 3 to 6 months
Technical accessibility Serve main content without depending on JavaScript rendering Medium Immediate after fix
Freshness Update figures and modification dates Low 2 to 6 weeks

The external authority lever deserves elaboration. Ahrefs analyses published in early 2026 identify YouTube mentions as the strongest predictor of AI visibility, ahead of Domain Rating and backlinks. Google and OpenAI train their models on YouTube content, and that content is heavily cited in generative answers.

Another finding from the same work: content length shows almost no correlation with AI citations. Writing 4,000 words does not get you into AI Mode. Answering a sub-question precisely does.

How to measure your visibility in Google AI Mode

Measuring AI Mode visibility requires a different protocol from classic rank tracking. Here is the method I apply with clients since the French rollout.

  1. Set your baseline before everyone else. AI Mode has just landed in France. Record your mentions across your 10 priority commercial queries this week, before the market wakes up. That starting point will serve as your reference for twelve months.
  2. Run each query at least five times. A single reading is statistically unusable given the measured volatility. Count the number of runs where your brand appears, not the position it holds.
  3. Calculate your share of voice. Divide the number of runs citing you by the total number of runs performed. That is your only reliable indicator.
  4. Identify the brands cited in your place. Systematically log the competitors appearing when you are absent. They hold the topical authority you need to build.
  5. Connect measurement to real traffic. Link Google Analytics 4 to isolate sessions from AI surfaces and verify that visibility converts into visits.

In my view, the mistake most French teams will make over the next six weeks is waiting for clean data before measuring. The baseline is taken now, while the rollout is partial. In three months you will have no reference point left to assess your progress.

The 4 practices Google says are useless

The guide Google published in May 2026 devotes a full section to demystifying AI search. Four practices are explicitly flagged as ineffective.

  • The llms.txt file brings no visibility advantage within Google’s AI features.
  • Artificially chopping content into fragmented paragraphs meant to ease extraction produces no measurable gain.
  • Keyword over-optimisation remains ineffective, as in classic search.
  • Inauthentic reviews do not improve chances of appearing.

I would qualify one point. The llms.txt case remains debated in the community, with contradictory results depending on the engine tested. Google’s position covers its own surfaces, not the whole generative ecosystem.

FAQ

Is Google AI Mode available in France?

Yes. Google launched the rollout of AI Mode and AI Overviews in France on 22 July 2026. Availability is progressive and may vary by account and device in the first weeks.

Do you need a Google account to use AI Mode?

The feature generally requires signing in to a personal Google account and may not work in private browsing. Google recommends enabling Web and App Activity to keep conversation history.

How many links does an AI Mode answer contain?

An answer contains 12.6 links on average, of which 90.8% appear in a separate source block rather than embedded directly in the answer text.

Does classic SEO still matter for AI Mode?

It serves as a foundation without being sufficient. Only 14% of URLs cited by AI Mode appear in the organic top 10 for the same keyword, showing that source selection follows a logic partly independent of traditional ranking.

How long does it take to appear in AI Mode?

Format and freshness levers produce effects within two to six weeks. Building external authority, the heaviest factor, takes three to six months of continuous work.

Can you stop Google using your content in AI Mode?

French press publishers have an opt-out negotiated within the neighbouring rights agreement. For other sites, control runs through standard indexing directives, at the cost of lost visibility in Google Search.
