€529.82 in revenue attributed to ChatGPT, on a French store that does not target the United States. That is the figure I found when I opened the Agentic channel of a Shopify site I track for GEO. My first reaction was suspicion.

Shopify Agentic Storefronts connects your catalogue to AI platforms and reports revenue by channel inside your admin. The shift is real: in Q1 2026, AI traffic to Shopify stores grew eightfold year over year, and orders from AI-powered searches grew nearly thirteenfold (Shopify, 2026).

One question the trade press has not answered: what are those figures worth when your store is based in France? I spent a week cross-checking orders, sales reports and official documentation. Here is what the dashboard measures, what it ignores, and the three reading errors that can distort a client report.

Key takeaways (version 1)

  • The “sells to customers in the United States” requirement unlocks the ChatGPT channel: your store itself can be based in France.
  • The Agentic dashboard shows revenue by AI channel, never by customer country. That breakdown lives in Analytics reports.
  • Google AI Mode and Gemini require a store based in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or Canada. France is excluded.
  • The search preview tool simulates the Shopify Catalog index, not the answer an AI actually gives.

What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?

Agentic Storefronts is a native Shopify sales channel that makes your products discoverable and purchasable inside conversational AI platforms. Your product data reaches those channels through Shopify Catalog, the shared product database that Shopify structures and enriches.

Four channel families are covered: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. The channel is active by default for eligible stores, with no installation required.

The timeline matters for judging how mature the product is:

  • 10 December 2025: announced as part of the Winter ’26 Edition.
  • 24 March 2026: general activation for eligible stores, with no opt-in.
  • 11 May 2026: launch of the dedicated admin surface, with per-channel metrics.
  • 17 June 2026: Spring ’26 Edition, Catalog API opened to third-party developers.

One mechanical detail is worth holding onto: ChatGPT acts as a discovery referrer and sends the buyer to your own online store checkout, inside the app’s embedded browser. Copilot, Google and Meta offer direct checkout within the channel when it is enabled. Orders land in your admin tagged with the originating channel.

Can a French store sell through ChatGPT?

Yes, on one precise condition: it must sell to customers located in the United States. The store itself can be based anywhere. Shopify’s documentation states this plainly, and it is the nuance everyone misses.

The eligibility rule that gets misread

The confusion comes from a quick reading. “Sells to the United States” gets interpreted as “targets the American market”, when it is in fact a channel-unlocking condition. A US shipping zone configured in your Markets settings is enough to make the store eligible.

Once the channel is open, it filters nothing further. Any ChatGPT user anywhere can discover your products through Shopify Catalog and land on your usual checkout, which serves France normally.

What Sidekick answers; and why it misleads

I put the question to Sidekick, Shopify’s built-in assistant. Its answer: since the store is French, some channels might not be available if it does not ship to the United States.

The phrasing puts the emphasis on where the store is based. The real criterion is the configured sales zone. A merchant who stops at that answer concludes they are excluded, and never activates a channel they are entitled to.

The proof in a single order

On the store I track, I opened an order attributed to the ChatGPT channel. Customer in Aix-en-Provence, first visit from ChatGPT, two visits in one day, a €95.88 purchase shipped by Colissimo with French VAT at 5.5%.

No American customer anywhere in the story. The US criterion served as an entry key, nothing beyond that. In my view, the real lesson is not the rule itself: it is that a built-in assistant does not replace documentation. On an eligibility question that decides whether an entire channel gets activated, an AI’s paraphrase introduces a risk nobody has any reason to carry.

What does the Agentic dashboard actually measure?

The dashboard measures orders attributed to an AI channel, recorded server-side at the moment of payment. That is its strength, and also the source of its blind spot.

The figures on screen and their scope

Over thirty days, the channel home screen showed €529.82 generated by more than 90 visits. The per-platform breakdown gave ChatGPT 87 visits, up 50%, and Microsoft Copilot 3 visits, up 200%. A 200% rise on three visits is statistical noise: the percentage flatters, the volume decides.

That data is reliable within its scope. The order is recorded regardless of what happens in the customer’s browser, which makes it immune to script blockers and broken sessions.

The blind spot — no breakdown by country

The screen gives revenue per AI channel. Never per customer country. Nothing tells you whether that €529.82 came from American buyers or from your home market.

To settle it, you have to leave the Agentic surface and build a report in Analytics, broken down by billing country code. On this store the answer was unambiguous: France accounted for €34,956.86 out of €35,949.62 in total sales, far ahead of Belgium at €740.99. The ChatGPT channel was serving the French market, not a marginal American flow.

What the Agentic surface shows

Revenue per AI channel, and visits for the individually named channels only, meaning ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.

What you have to find elsewhere

The customer’s country in Analytics reports, the real shipping address on the individual order page, the breakdown of grouped channels which exists in no native source, and everything that happens before the purchase, in a dedicated visibility tracker.

Why Shopify, GA4 and Matomo never show the same number

The gap is structural, not a configuration error. The three systems do not count the same thing at the same moment.

Shopify records an order server-side. GA4 and Matomo record a session in which a purchase event fired. When the script fails to load, the order still exists on Shopify’s side and disappears from analytics.

The AI channel makes this worse for two reasons. The embedded browsers in AI apps break session continuity and often lose the referrer. And in Copilot or Google AI Mode direct checkout, Shopify states that Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire: only server-to-server pixels are emitted.

The monthly reporting trap. If you add SEO revenue from Matomo to AI revenue from Shopify, you risk double counting. A customer who discovers your brand organically then buys after passing through ChatGPT will be partly credited to SEO by a multi-touch attribution model, and fully credited to the AI channel by Shopify. Check how your analytics tool classifies chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai referrers before adding anything together.

Is the search preview tool reliable?

This tool displays the raw output of Shopify Catalog search. It does not show an AI’s answer. Shopify says so without ambiguity and asks you to treat it as “a directional signal, not an exact prediction”, noting that agentic channels re-rank results using their own logic.

The mechanism runs in two stages. Shopify Catalog indexes and pre-ranks your products. Then each platform queries that index and applies its own ranking, weighing data quality, relevance, availability, price and engagement signals, before shortlisting a handful of products.

The direct consequence: a product shown in the Catalog top 10 is not guaranteed to appear in a real ChatGPT conversation. On the store I tested, the query “gasseri weight loss supplement capsules” did return a product in the French top 10, without that saying anything about the answer actually served to a user.

The tool stays useful for one specific job: completeness diagnosis. It flags missing images, incomplete policies, thin descriptions and absent reviews. Treat it as a readiness score, much like a technical SEO score, never as a position.

Which AI channels stay out of reach for a French brand?

Three of the main channels are fully or partly closed to a store established in France. Here is the state of the requirements, verified on 28 August 2026 in Shopify’s documentation.

Channel Eligibility requirement French store
ChatGPT Sell to customers located in the United States, store based anywhere Available
Microsoft Copilot Sell to customers located in the United States Available, direct checkout limited to US-based customers
Google AI Mode and Gemini Store based in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or Canada, and selling into one of those countries Excluded
Other channels, including Perplexity Grouped access through Shopify Catalog Active, with no dedicated metrics

The Google case deserves a precision, because the information circulates poorly. The criterion is not about shipping zones but about the store’s country of establishment. No Markets configuration makes a French company eligible. The channel also requires the Google & YouTube sales channel installed with automatic product and shipping synchronisation, and it remains in early access.

Perplexity is a different case. The channel appears under “Other channels”, with an active status and a note that channel information is unavailable. Your products are therefore potentially discoverable there, with no figures surfacing in your admin.

The maths is quick. For a French brand, the native dashboard tops out at two genuinely measurable channels. This is not a rollout limitation set to disappear: it is a design constraint tied to where the company is established.

How to complete the measurement when the native tools stop

Three sources overlap to rebuild a full picture, each covering a blind spot in the other two.

  1. The Agentic surface for revenue attributed at order level. This is your source of truth on conversion, immune to blockers.
  2. Analytics reports for the geographic breakdown and verification of real shipping addresses. This is what turns a channel figure into usable information.
  3. Query-level visibility tracking for the channels the native tools do not cover, and for everything that happens before the purchase.

That third point is the one merchants underestimate. The Agentic channel only fires at the order. It says nothing about the conversations where your brand was passed over for a competitor, nor about answers where an AI states a false figure about your products. An order attributed to ChatGPT is the visible tip of a recommendation volume of which you only see the conversions.

That is the work Cockpyt AI does: measuring your presence in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every week, identifying which brands are cited in your place, and spotting factual errors about your catalogue. Where Shopify stops at the order, query-level tracking covers the recommendation phase, including on channels your admin does not measure. For more on the method, see how to measure ChatGPT visibility without getting it wrong.

In my view, the real lesson of this week goes beyond Shopify. A number displayed in a dashboard is never raw data: it is one system’s interpretation, with its own eligibility rules, blind spots and definition of what counts. Before you put it in a client report, be able to answer two questions: what exactly does it measure, and what does it fail to see.

Are competitors being cited instead of you?

FAQ: Shopify Agentic Storefronts

Do you have to ship to the United States to activate Agentic Storefronts from France?

For ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, yes: the store must sell to customers located in the United States, but it can be based in France. A US sales zone configured in your Markets settings is enough. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, shipping changes nothing, since the criterion is the store’s country of establishment.

Do Agentic Storefronts carry extra fees?

No. Shopify states there are no fees associated with selling through these channels beyond your standard payment processing fees. This point was the subject of rumours in Q1 2026 about an OpenAI-side commission, which current documentation does not mention.

How do you confirm an order really came from ChatGPT?

Open the order page in your admin. The conversion summary block shows the source of the first visit and the number of visits before purchase. This is the most reliable check, since it relies on attribution recorded by Shopify at order level.

Why doesn’t Perplexity appear in my Shopify statistics?

Perplexity is grouped under “Other channels”, which covers platforms accessing Shopify Catalog without a named integration. The status can read as active while Shopify displays that channel information is unavailable. No dedicated metrics are reported for this group.

Does Agentic revenue add to the SEO revenue in my report?

Not automatically. The two scopes can overlap if the same customer touched both channels. Check first how your analytics tool categorises AI referrers. Present the two lines separately with a methodology note until that check is done.

How long before products are indexed in Shopify Catalog?

Initial indexing by AI channels takes a few business days after activation, provided your products are eligible and your policies complete. In the other direction, if you remove Shopify Catalog access, Shopify states that data sharing can continue for up to seven days.

Can I disable a single AI channel without switching off the others?

Yes. Turn off “Allow Shopify to manage for me” in Sales channels then Agentic, then open the relevant channel to remove its Shopify Catalog access or direct checkout. Your products may still be listed by that channel through web crawling, independently of Shopify Catalog.
