An AI Overview checker tells you one simple thing: when someone types a keyword, does Google display an AI answer, and is your site cited in it? That’s the core of it. The rest is detail that free tools forget to explain.

In December 2025, Ahrefs analysed 300,000 keywords. The finding: when an AI Overview appears, the CTR of the top organic position drops by 58%. You can rank number one on Google and lose more than half your clicks without changing a single line of your content.

I’m Florian Zorgnotti, an SEO and GEO consultant. I’ve been testing these checkers since they appeared, and I’ll be straight with you: most of them answer the wrong question. They check a single moment, on a single engine, often calibrated for the US market. In this article, I show you how to use them correctly, how to read the AIO signal with no tool at all, and why the French case changes everything.

Key takeaways

  • An AI Overview checker answers two questions: does this keyword trigger an AIO, and is my domain cited in it?
  • A free check gives you a snapshot; it doesn’t detect citation rotation (70% of cited pages change within 2 to 3 months, per Authoritas).
  • With no tool at all, the divergence between rising impressions and falling clicks in Google Search Console signals an AIO.
  • In France, a US-calibrated checker can return a false “no AIO”: real AI visibility is also measured on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

What Is an AI Overview Checker and What Is It For?

An AI Overview checker is a tool that tests a keyword and tells you two things: whether Google displays an AI-generated answer at the top of the results, and whether your domain appears among the cited sources. You enter a query and a site, the tool checks the live SERP, and it returns a verdict.

The AI Overview (AIO), formerly SGE, is that Gemini-written answer block that appears above the blue links. It occupies position zero. It synthesises several sources and cites a small number of domains. Being cited in that block is now worth more than ranking first in the organic results just below it.

So the checker’s role is precise. It measures your exposure in this new answer surface. A classic rank tracker tells you where you sit in the blue links. It tells you nothing about your presence in the AI block. That’s exactly the gap a checker fills.

One-off check or continuous monitoring: the real distinction

A free one-off checker gives you a photo. You type a keyword, you see the current result. Useful for a quick diagnostic or to verify a specific query before writing.

Continuous monitoring tracks your queries over time. It detects when you gain a citation, when you lose one, and who takes your place. This distinction isn’t cosmetic. AIO placements are far more volatile than organic rankings, and a snapshot taken on a Tuesday can be wrong by Thursday.

Why Check Your Presence in AI Overviews in 2026?

Because the AI Overview captures the clicks that used to go to your page. The 2025-2026 figures leave no room for doubt, and they come from independent sources that measure different things while pointing the same way.

Ahrefs compared the CTR of position 1 with and without an AIO across 300,000 keywords. In April 2025, the study measured a 34.5% drop. In December 2025, on an expanded dataset, the drop reached 58%. In other words, out of 100 clicks that used to go to the first page, only 42 remain.

Study Measured CTR drop What is measured
Ahrefs (Dec. 2025) −58% Position 1 CTR, queries with AIO vs without
Seer Interactive (2026) −61% Overall organic CTR on AIO queries
Pew Research (July 2025) −47% relative Real behaviour: 8% click with AIO vs 15% without

There’s a second, lesser-known effect that justifies a regular check on its own. According to Authoritas, over a 2 to 3 month period, around 70% of the pages cited in AI Overviews change, and these changes are independent of organic rankings. Your citation is never locked in.

In my view, the right metric isn’t “am I cited today”. It’s “what share of my target queries triggers an AIO, and on what proportion am I cited stably”. An isolated figure is worthless. It’s the trend over several weeks that tells you whether your GEO work is paying off. You can adjust this reading to your priorities, but I’ve never seen a one-off audit predict anything.

How to Use an AI Overview Checker: The 4-Step Method

A checker runs on four simple moves. The method stays the same whether the tool is free or built into a monitoring platform.

  1. Enter your query and your domain. Pick a keyword you actually work on, not your brand. Informational queries trigger far more AIOs than navigational ones.
  2. Set the location. An AIO depends on country and language. A check in “United States” tells you nothing about what a user in Lyon sees. This setting is the number one trap of free tools.
  3. Read the verdict. Two pieces of information matter: does the keyword trigger an AIO, and is your domain in the citations? If a competitor appears in your place, note it.
  4. Repeat and track. A single check predicts nothing. Test your priority queries every week, not every quarter, to catch citation gains and losses.

How to Detect an AI Overview With No Tool?

You can spot an AIO directly in Google Search Console, without paying a cent. The signal is a divergence: on a query, your impressions stay stable or rise while your clicks fall. That gap betrays an AI block answering before the user reaches your link.

The manual method is simple. Open the Performance report in Search Console, segment by query over the last twelve to sixteen months, then isolate the queries where the clicks curve pulls away from the impressions curve. Those queries are your priority AIO suspects.

This reading has a limit. Search Console won’t tell you whether you’re cited in the block, or who is cited in your place. It flags the problem, not its cause. For that, open the SERP in private browsing on the right locale, or move to a tool that captures the block content and its sources.

AI Overviews in France: Why Your Checker May Lie to You

A checker calibrated for the US market can return a reassuring “no AIO” that means nothing for your French traffic. The rollout of AI Overviews in France is more recent and more partial than in the United States, and coverage moves fast. Testing a query on a US locale and concluding you’re safe is an analysis error.

The right reflex is to test each query on your real market. Set the country to France, the language to French, and rerun the check query by query. What you see in New York has no value for a user in Nantes.

In my view, methodological honesty is an asset here, not a weakness. French data on AI Overviews is still patchy, and I’d rather say so plainly than extrapolate US figures. A consultant who presents US stats as if they described the French market is selling you hot air. Track your own queries, on your own locale, and build your internal baseline.

Beyond Google: Checking Your Visibility on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

An AI Overview checker covers one front: Google. But your brand also plays out inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, where millions of queries are asked every day outside the Google SERP. Checking your AIO and ignoring these engines means shutting your eyes to half the field.

The logic stays the same, but the surface changes. On these engines, the question becomes: when a user asks a question in your field, is your brand cited, and which brands appear in your place? That citation share, your Share of Voice in AI answers, is monitored like a ranking: continuously, not once a quarter.

That’s exactly what I measure with Cockpyt AI. The tool tracks your visibility on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with a basket of seven prompt variations per query to avoid the bias of a single phrasing. It connects GA4 to attribute real traffic, and it delivers a technical GEO audit with a prioritised action plan. You don’t just measure: you know what to fix, and in what order. The price is fixed, €29 per month billed annually, with a 14-day trial and no credit card.

Which Tool Should You Choose for Your Profile?

The choice doesn’t hinge on a ranking, but on what you want to do with the data. Three tiers of tooling answer three distinct needs.

Profile Need Tool type
One-off diagnostic Check a query before writing Free AIO checker
Google tracking over time Track AIO citations week after week AIO tracker or SERP filter (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking)
Global AI visibility Track ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity + action plan Multi-engine monitoring (Cockpyt AI)

A freelancer preparing an article doesn’t have the same needs as an agency that must prove ROI to a client. The first is fine with a free checker. The second needs continuous tracking and an actionable deliverable. Choose the tool that matches the decision you have to make, not the loudest marketing promise.

FAQ: Your Questions About AI Overview Checkers

Is an AI Overview checker 100% reliable?

No, and no serious tool claims to be. The SERP is dynamic and personalised, so two checks of the same keyword can vary. A good checker runs a live SERP check and gives you a faithful snapshot for a standard non-personalised search, but it remains a single moment.

Is a free checker enough to track my visibility?

For a one-off diagnostic, yes. For tracking, no. AIO citations change by 70% over 2 to 3 months, per Authoritas. A single check doesn’t capture that rotation. Tracking needs a regular measure, weekly ideally.

How can I tell if a query triggers an AI Overview without a tool?

Open Google Search Console, segment by query, and spot the queries where your impressions stay stable while your clicks fall. That divergence is a strong signal of an AIO. You can also open the SERP in private browsing on your locale.

Are AI Overviews rolled out in France?

The rollout in France is more recent and more partial than in the United States, and it evolves quickly. A checker set to a US locale can mislead you. Always test your queries with the country set to France and the language to French.

Does an AI Overview checker measure my visibility in ChatGPT?

No. An AIO checker targets Google only. Your visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity is measured with a multi-engine monitoring tool that tracks your citation share in these AI answers.

What should I do if a competitor is cited in my place in an AI Overview?

Analyse the cited page: format, structure, entities covered, clarity of the intro. A lost citation is often recoverable with an intro rewrite or a shift to a more extractable format. AI citation is heavily weighted toward the first third of a piece.
