Key takeaways
- If you already pay for Semrush and track a single domain, adding the AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month is a rational choice: your SEO and AI data stay in one place.
- The AI visibility score Semrush displays is not based on your prompts. It comes from a database of more than 300 million prompts collected by Semrush and is calculated against the median of your competitors.
- The toolkit is billed per domain and per user: each additional domain or colleague adds $99 a month.
- For a consultant tracking three clients without a Semrush subscription, Cockpyt AI covers the need at 79 EUR excl. VAT a month, French monthly audit included.
I co-founded Cockpyt AI. You are reading a comparison written by an interested party, against a vendor that is now part of Adobe. You are entitled to expect me to say plainly when Semrush is the better choice, and I will start with that case.
The real question is not “which is the best tool”. It is the one most agencies and consultants ask: should you pay for a dedicated AI tracking tool when you already pay for an SEO suite? The answer depends on three variables, and none of them is measurement quality.
Does ChatGPT recommend your brand?
Measure your presence and find out which brands get cited instead of you. No credit card.
Semrush AI Toolkit or Cockpyt AI: which should you choose in 2026?
Stay with Semrush if you already subscribe to its SEO suite, track a single domain, and prompt research with volumes and intent is part of your work. Connecting keywords, backlinks and AI visibility in one interface has real value.
Choose Cockpyt AI if you are not a Semrush customer, track two to five brands, or need to hand a client a monthly audit rather than access to a platform.

Three data regimes in a single toolkit
This is the point comparisons miss, and it is documented in Semrush’s knowledge base. The toolkit does not measure one thing. It combines three different sources, with three different update frequencies.
- The analysis reports (Visibility Overview, competitor research, prompt research) rely on a database of more than 300 million prompts Semrush collects from clickstream data and its Google keyword dataset. Those prompts are not yours.
- The Brand Performance reports run a broad selection of common queries through models such as ChatGPT and AI Mode, update weekly, and cover one domain per licence.
- Prompt tracking is the only component that measures your own questions, 25 on the base plan, updated daily.
The consequence is concrete. The AI Visibility Score, the figure out of 100 displayed first, compares your mention frequency to the median of your main competitors, which Semrush identifies automatically. It is a relative score, calculated on a sample of prompts the tool chose. It describes your position within your category, not your presence on the questions that generate your revenue.
None of these approaches is wrong. The prompt database gives a broad market view no targeted tracking tool can produce. But these are not the same data, and a score rising in Visibility Overview tells you nothing about your 25 tracked prompts.
In my view, this is the thing to understand before any purchase in this category. Ask every vendor, myself included, which questions the headline figure is calculated on. At Cockpyt AI the answer is simple: on your questions, and only on them, which deprives me of a market view Semrush provides very well.
What Semrush does better than Cockpyt AI
Five gaps, two of them structural.
Prompt research with volumes and intent
Semrush offers the equivalent of keyword research for AI: volumes by topic, difficulty, intent. You know which subjects to invest in before writing. I offer nothing equivalent, and it is the clearest functional gap between our two tools.
Integration with your SEO data
Keywords, backlinks, rankings, technical audit and AI visibility in the same interface. For a team already steering its SEO inside Semrush, adding an AI layer in the same place avoids double entry and a second tool to train on.
Coverage of Google’s surfaces
AI Overviews and AI Mode are within Semrush’s scope. I do not track them. Since AI Overviews rolled out in France, that gap matters for businesses driven by Google traffic.
Market depth
A database of more than 300 million prompts, reports covering more than 40 countries including France, and a competitive view built without configuring anything. For market analysis or a sales proposal, that breadth has no equivalent in a targeted tracking tool.
Ecosystem and vendor
API, MCP server, a Looker Studio connector through reports, and a vendor that is now part of Adobe. When a tool has to be approved by procurement, that argument carries a lot of weight.
The real cost from the second domain
The public pricing shows $99 a month. The knowledge base specifies what that price covers: one domain for Brand Performance reports, one user, 25 tracked prompts. Each extra domain adds $99 a month, each extra user too, and each block of 50 prompts $60.
| Situation | Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, monthly | Cockpyt AI, monthly excl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 1 domain, 1 user | $99 | 29 EUR (Solo) |
| 1 domain, 2 users | $198 | 29 EUR (Solo) |
| 3 domains, 1 user | $297 | 79 EUR (Consultant) |
| 5 domains, 2 users | $594 | 139 EUR (Agency) |
Semrush One lowers the bill if you also want the SEO suite: the Starter plan, at $199 a month according to published tests, bundles the SEO suite and 50 tracked prompts. But per-domain logic for Brand Performance reports and per-licence logic for users remain the same.
The comparison is not symmetrical and I do not want to twist it: on one side you pay for a full SEO suite, on the other for an AI tracking tool alone. If you need the suite anyway, the gap reads differently. If you do not, you are paying for features you will not use.
What Cockpyt AI offers in return
A GEO audit delivered every month. Once a month per project, on all three plans: technical site audit, 10 questions tested under several phrasings, AI traffic analysis, prioritised action plan and a 33-point checklist, exportable. Semrush produces recommendations inside its reports, I produce a document you hand over or bill for.
Measurement centred on your questions. My score aggregates only your tracked questions, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. You know exactly what it rests on.
The origin of each answer. My calls go through the official APIs with web search enabled. Models do not always use it and sometimes fall back on memory, so I flag on every recorded answer which of the two applied.
Hallucination detection. A wrong price, a discontinued service, a mix-up with a namesake.
A trial with no credit card. The Semrush toolkit has no free trial according to its own documentation. You pay before seeing your data.
What neither of them fixes
A study published by SparkToro in January 2026 ran 12 identical prompts almost 3,000 times through 600 volunteers: the odds of getting the same brand list twice came out below 1 in 100. Whether a score rests on a database of 300 million prompts or on your 15 questions, it describes an unstable phenomenon that should be read as a trend over several weeks.
A study from the Association for Computational Linguistics published in December 2025 points the same way: even with locked settings, five models tested over ten runs show performance gaps of up to 15 %. The size of a database does not remove that variability, it dilutes it.
Which tool for which profile?
Already a Semrush customer, single domain. Semrush. Add the toolkit or move to Semrush One, the integration with your SEO data is worth more than the price gap.
Team choosing its editorial topics. Semrush, for prompt research with volumes and intent.
Business driven by Google traffic. Semrush, for AI Overviews and AI Mode, which I do not cover.
Consultant with two to five clients, no Semrush subscription. Cockpyt AI. Per-domain billing makes Semrush three to four times more expensive on this profile.
Small business discovering the subject. Cockpyt AI, for the free trial and the 29 EUR excl. VAT entry ticket. Or, with no budget at all, a free diagnostic first.
More than five brands. Semrush Enterprise or a platform with no project cap. Cockpyt AI stops at five.
In my view, many agencies will end up running both without meaning to: Semrush for research and the market view, a dedicated tool for client tracking and the deliverable. That is not absurd as long as each tool answers a different question. It becomes absurd when both measure the same thing.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Semrush AI Toolkit and the AI Visibility Toolkit the same product?
Yes. The official name is AI Visibility Toolkit. It is sold on its own at $99 a month per domain, or included in Semrush One plans that bundle the SEO suite and AI tracking.
Is the Semrush toolkit included in the classic SEO subscription?
No. It is a separate module added to your subscription, or obtained through Semrush One. If you add it mid-way through an annual subscription, Semrush charges a prorated amount for the remaining term.
Which engines does the Semrush toolkit track exactly?
The pricing page mentions ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. The documentation describes a prompt database covering ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and prompt tracking on platforms such as AI Mode and ChatGPT. Coverage varies by report: check that the engines you care about appear in the one you will use.
Can you share the Semrush toolkit with your team?
Each user needs their own licence at $99 a month. The toolkit cannot be shared through a corporate account’s pooled limits. Brand Performance reports are, however, visible to every member who holds a licence.
Does Semrush offer a free trial of the AI toolkit?
No, according to its own knowledge base. Semrush offers a seven-day trial of its general platform, but not of the AI Visibility Toolkit. Cockpyt AI offers 14 days with no credit card.
Should you drop Semrush for Cockpyt AI?
No, and that is not what I recommend. The two tools do not do the same job. Semrush remains a full SEO suite that Cockpyt AI does not replace in any way. The question only concerns the AI tracking component.
How long before an AI visibility score moves?
Allow 3 to 8 weeks after your fixes, whichever tool you use. Models take time to absorb new content or citations earned elsewhere. A gap observed within a few days reflects answer variability, not a result.
