You are looking for the best GEO consultant in France. You run the search. You land on eight rankings that name eight different winners.

My name is Florian Zorgnotti. I have worked as an SEO consultant since 2016 and I co-founded Cockpyt AI. I am one of the profiles these rankings are supposed to assess. So let me say it upfront: I will not publish a ninth one.

I went through the pages that dominate Google on this query. First place changes every time the publisher of the page changes, and several authors rank themselves number one. Day rates quoted range from 850 to 1,800 euros with no public benchmark behind them. For comparison, the Malt 2026 barometer puts the experienced SEO consultant at 500 euros per day on average and lists no GEO category at all.

What you get instead: seven verifiable criteria, a 30-minute vetting protocol, and the questions that expose a weak provider in two exchanges.

No independent body ranks GEO consultants in France in 2026, and the eight rankings that dominate Google each name a different winner, often their own author. Choose on a grid of seven verifiable criteria and a 30-minute vetting protocol, not on a top 10.

Who are the best GEO consultants in France in 2026?

Nobody can answer that question in a verifiable way today. GEO has no professional body, no recognised certification and no independent directory in France. The discipline is three years old. The few labelling attempts that exist are private initiatives run by companies that sell GEO services themselves.

My name is Florian Zorgnotti. I have been an SEO consultant since 2016, I co-founded Cockpyt AI. I am one of the profiles these rankings should in theory assess. You will understand why I am not publishing a ninth ranking with myself at the top.

What I can do is show you how these pages are built, and hand you the grid I would use if I had to hire a GEO provider for my own business.

Four families of profiles share the French Generative Engine Optimization market in 2026. The retrained technical SEO, who comes at the subject through structured data, AI bot crawling and the llms.txt file. The editorial profile, who works on passage citability and question-answer structure. The data or developer profile, who builds their own measurement scripts on model APIs. The generalist agency, which adds a GEO line to an existing SEO offer. None of these families is inherently better than the others. They answer different needs.

Why GEO consultant rankings are not reliable

The name at the top changes every time the publisher of the page changes. I analysed the pages ranking for the French query “meilleurs consultants GEO France” in the first half of 2026. The result fits in one table.

Page analysed Profile ranked first Who publishes the page Date shown
robz.fr Robin Machard (RobZ IA) Robin Machard himself May 2026
julien-gourdon.fr Julien Gourdon Julien Gourdon himself July 2026
cap-entreprises.fr Erwin Kwolek (Leader Référencement) Third-party site July 2026
latramontane.fr Ranking of 10 profiles Agency May 2026
noqode.fr Ranking of 8 profiles Webflow agency July 2026
meilleurs-consultants-geo.fr Multi-profile directory NEWP, published methodology Q2 2026 edition

The format eats its own tail. A ranking of GEO consultants is, by construction, an exercise in GEO. Whoever masters the discipline best produces the most citable page, becomes the reference the models pick up, and therefore appears first. The ranking measures the ability to make oneself citable. It does not measure the ability to deliver results for a client.

That says nothing about the competence of the people listed. Several of these profiles are good. It says everything about the format.

The numbers travel without a primary source

Two different pages claim that ChatGPT accounts for 9% of all digital queries worldwide in 2026, crediting the figure to First Page Sage. Same value, same wording, and neither links to the original publication. The number travels from page to page and never gets checked.

Another example. A directory page backs the claim that “a large majority of consumers and decision-makers consult ChatGPT before buying” with McKinsey’s State of AI report. That report documents AI adoption inside organisations, not the purchase journey of French consumers. The same page cites a Gartner study titled “Generative AI Will Drive 50% of Search Changes by 2028”. The two Gartner predictions actually published on the subject read differently: a 25% drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026, announced in February 2024, and a drop of 50% or more in brand organic search traffic by 2028.

In my view, this is the single best selection test available. A GEO consultant whose job is to make a brand citable by models that reuse sources without checking them cannot afford to spread unsourced numbers on their own page. If the shop window contains statistics that lead nowhere, the working method will carry the same shortcuts.

The 7 criteria that separate a real GEO consultant from the rest

A GEO consultant is judged on their measurement method before anything else. Here is the grid I apply.

1. Engine coverage, and how those engines get queried

Ask which ones they measure: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Mistral, Google AI Overviews. Then ask how. Querying a model through its API and querying the public interface do not return the same answers: the interface adds a web retrieval layer, model routing and personalisation that the API does not reproduce. A provider who cannot explain that choice is not measuring anything stable.

2. A written measurement protocol

How many prompts, at what frequency, with which phrasing variations, over what reference period. Model answers vary from one run to the next. Without repetition and a fixed cadence, a rise in citations is noise presented as a result.

3. A baseline taken before any work starts

If they do not measure your visibility before touching the site, they will never be able to prove anything. The first deliverable of a serious GEO engagement is a dated situation report, not an action plan.

4. Entity work, not only content

Models reason about entities. Wikidata item, name consistency across directories, sameAs markup, mentions on third-party sources the engines pull from. A consultant who only talks about optimised copywriting is covering half the job.

5. AI traffic attribution

Visits coming from ChatGPT or Perplexity land as referrals and drown in direct traffic without proper configuration. A competent provider connects Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, isolates AI sources and shows you the curve. Without that, you are paying for visibility nobody ties back to revenue.

6. Handling hallucinations and third-party sources

A brand can be cited with an outdated price, a feature that does not exist or an executive who left two years ago. Fixing that means identifying the source pages the models pull from, often third-party comparison articles, Reddit threads or old directory entries. Ask how they handle this specific case.

7. What they refuse to guarantee

No provider can guarantee a citation in ChatGPT. Models change, retrieval layers change, competitors move. A consultant who promises a position or a citation percentage is selling something they do not control.

How to vet a GEO consultant in 30 minutes

Four exchanges are enough to separate a practitioner from an opportunist. Here is the sequence I recommend, in order.

Step 1 – Test their visibility, then discount the result

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity which GEO consultant they recommend in France. Note whether the name appears, and which sources the engines lean on. Then look at where those sources come from. If the citations come only from pages the consultant published themselves, you are measuring self-promotion, not reputation. This test is worth what it reveals about sources, not the ranking it produces.

Step 2 – Ask for the measurement protocol in writing

One page, no more. Number of prompts tracked, frequency, engines covered, query method, how variability gets handled. A consultant who has already done the work sends it within ten minutes. A consultant who improvises answers with a call invitation.

Step 3 – Ask for an anonymised audit extract

Two or three pages of a real deliverable with names removed. You are looking for three things: a dated situation report with numbers, actions prioritised by impact, and recommendations tied to specific pages. An audit that boils down to “add structured data and an FAQ” is a template.

Step 4 – Check their sources

Take three statistics from their site and click the links. Does the source exist, does it say what the page claims, and what year is it from. That check takes five minutes and removes a fair share of candidates.

Step 5 – Ask what they cannot guarantee

The answer to that question is worth more than any case study. An experienced practitioner will talk about answer volatility, dependence on third-party sources and timelines. A salesperson will talk about guaranteed results.

How much does a GEO consultant cost in France in 2026?

No public benchmark measures GEO consultant rates in 2026. Malt, the French reference for freelance rate data, publishes a grid by profession that includes an “SEO consultants” category and none for GEO. On that 2026 grid, the experienced SEO consultant sits at 500 € per day on average, with a progression by seniority running from 281 € to 589 €.

The figures quoted in GEO rankings tell a different story. One page announces a median day rate of 850 € within a 550 to 1,500 € range. Another announces 900 to 1,800 € for a senior profile. Neither cites a source. The gap between those claims and the only public data available deserves to be raised before you sign.

The benchmarks I observe on the French-speaking market, to be treated as orders of magnitude rather than a survey:

  • One-off GEO audit: 1,500 to 5,000 € depending on site size and the number of engines covered.
  • Monthly retainer: 800 to 3,000 € per month for a small or mid-sized business, more for a high-volume site or a highly competitive sector.
  • In-house team training: one to two days, billed at the consultant’s day rate.

In my view, the right trade-off is not the day rate but the ratio between the cost of the engagement and the cost of measurement. Paying 3,000 € a month to a consultant who tracks your visibility through occasional manual tests means funding an opinion. Paying less to a consultant backed by automated, documented tracking gives you a curve you can put in front of your board.

Freelance, agency or tooled-up consultant: which model fits your structure?

The model follows your internal delivery capacity, not the size of the provider.

  • Small business, SME and solopreneur: a freelance who combines audit, recommendations and tracking. You need one point of contact who tells you what to do and in what order, on a modest monthly budget, with measurement that runs without your involvement.
  • In-house marketing leadership: a consultant able to produce board-ready reporting, with AI traffic attribution in GA4 and share of voice tracking against named competitors.
  • SEO agency: a partner who brings method and tooling while your teams execute. The real question here is the ability to industrialise tracking across several clients without multiplying manual tests.

One thing applies to all three: measurement has to survive the consultant’s departure. A GEO engagement that leaves behind a spreadsheet of screenshots leaves you nothing. One that leaves an active tracking setup leaves you an asset.

The layer your consultant will not replace: continuous measurement

A consultant produces recommendations, a tool produces a curve. The two complement each other, and confusing them gets expensive. Visibility inside generative engines moves every week, without announcements and without a consultable history. Without regular readings, you notice a drop in citations three months after it started.

That is the problem Laurent Séjourné and I set out to solve with Cockpyt AI. The platform measures your brand presence on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every week, calculates your share of voice against the competitors you name, surfaces the sources models cite instead of you, and connects AI traffic attribution to Google Analytics 4 and Search Console. A monthly GEO audit, technical and editorial, ships with a prioritised action plan. You remain free to have it executed by whichever consultant you choose.

If you already work with a GEO provider, the platform acts as referee: it measures what they deliver, independently of what they report. If you do not have one yet, it gives you the quantified baseline you need to negotiate an engagement on clear terms.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a GEO consultant

Is there an official GEO consultant certification in France?

No. No public GEO-specific label is issued in France in the first half of 2026. The certifications some providers display are private training programmes or commercial platform badges. They indicate an investment, not a competence validated by a neutral third party.

Can a traditional SEO consultant do GEO?

Yes, on one condition: that they have built a measurement method specific to generative engines. The fundamentals overlap heavily, authority, structure, content freshness. What changes is the object being measured. A consultant presenting Google rank tracking rebranded as GEO has not made the transition.

How long before citations appear in AI answers?

Count two to four months for the first citations on niche queries, longer in competitive markets. The timeline depends mostly on your presence across the third-party sources models consult, not only on your own site. A provider announcing results in three weeks is describing an outlier, not a method.

Should you pick a GEO consultant near you?

Proximity brings nothing technically. It matters if your business is local, because the consultant then needs to understand the regional source ecosystem engines pull from: local press, directories, business listings. For a national or online business, location is irrelevant.

Can a GEO consultant guarantee a citation in ChatGPT?

No, and that promise is the most reliable red flag on the market. Answers vary from one run to the next, models get updated without notice and the sources they reuse change. What can be steered is the probability of appearing and share of voice across a basket of queries tracked over time.

Do you need a tracking tool on top of the consultant?

Yes, as soon as you want to prove a result. The consultant brings analysis and execution, the tool brings history and repeatability. Cockpyt AI records your brand presence on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every week and connects AI traffic to Google Analytics 4. The trial runs 14 days with no credit card.

How do you spot a fake GEO consultant ranking?

Three signals are enough. The author of the page appears in the ranking, usually first. The statistics quoted link to nothing clickable, or link to a study about a different subject. No methodology is published: no criteria, no weighting, no data collection date.
